Crochet Project: Tulip Flower Box Detailed Tutorial Part 1

by Ethan YUEN 02 May 2025

Opening

Welcome to Part 1 of our three-part crochet tulip basket series, where we’ll establish the sturdy foundation and introduce the first hints of floral texture . In this post, you’ll work rounds 1 through 6 in a warm khaki yarn to form a solid, even base, then begin crocheting the integrated tulip motif in blush-pink using the puff stitch for a plush effect. The puff stitch, a variation of the cluster stitch, creates raised, bobble-like textures that are perfect for suggesting petal shapes directly within the basket walls.

We’ll discuss general techniques—like maintaining consistent gauge for round work, positioning color changes for seamless motif integration, and using stitch markers to mark tulip centers—without prescribing exact counts, so you can customize diameter and flower spacing to your taste. By embedding the peach-pink tulips into rounds 5 and 6, you ensure the floral pattern emerges organically from the basket body rather than appearing as an afterthought. This approach leverages tapestry or intarsia colorwork principles in crochet, adapted for puff-stitch texture .

Grab your khaki worsted-weight yarn, a coordinating blush-pink, and a hook one size smaller than you’d use for the base to give the puff stitches definition . Have stitch markers, a tapestry needle, and sharp scissors at the ready. You’ll also want good lighting and a cozy workspace—maybe with your favorite podcast queued up—to keep those rounds rolling smoothly.Let’s get into the details of today’s tutorial.

Tutorial of Part 1

Round 1:

Make a magic Ring

Pick up the brown yarn and open your left hand, loop the yarn over your pinky, then pull it upwards, passing it over your index finger, and pull it back down. Use your thumb and middle finger to pinch the yarn, creating a circle

Insert the crochet hook into the loop created by your left hand. Pull the hook from under the yarn, catching the yarn from behind.Pull the yarn through the loop between your thumb and index finger.Yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook.

Now lets start the magic ring.

Chain three as the turing chain

Yarn over and work 12 double crochets(dc)

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

Tips:

After you finished the first double crochet,it shows a V shape from the side of view.Place a stitch marker at the V-shape.This will help us identify the stitch later when we join

This round will consist of 12 stitches total. You can count the number and check

You should tighten the loop at the beginning of the ring

Round 2:

Chain three as the turing chain

12 double crochet increase (dc inc)

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

Tips:

The turning chain(3 chain)will count as our first double crochet at this round

Double crochet increase means we should work two double crochet in the same stitch

Remember to mark the stitch marker at the begining. It will help us identify the stitch later when we join

remove the stitch marker before making the slip stitch

This round will consist of 24 stitches total. You can count the number and check

Round 3:

Chain three as the turing chain

1 double crochet, 1 doulbe crochet increase as a group, repeat 12 times

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

Tips:

Since the turning chain is count as our first double crochet, we need to find the stitch next to the turning chain on the left side to work doulbe crochet increase

Remember to mark the stitch marker at the begining. It will help us identify the stitch later when we join

When working the slip stitch at this round, incert the hook into the gap between the turning chain and the double crochet, rather than the stitch itself.

This round will consist of 36 stitches total. You can count the number and check

Round 4:

Chain three as the turing chain

1 double crochet, 1 doulbe crochet increase, 1double crochet as a group, repeat 12 times

This round will consist of 48 stitches total. You can count the number and check

 Round 5:

Chain three as the turing chain

48 double crochet (front loop only)

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

Tips:

Front loop double crochet : find the stitch we need to work with and pick up the loop that is farthest from us,Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch and pull through. Yarn over, and pull through the first two loops.Yarn over again and pull through the remaing two loops.

Remember, we need to insert the hook and pull up the front loop only during working the each double crochet for this round.

When working the slip stitch at this round, incert the hook into the gap between the turning chain and the double crochet, rather than the stitch itself.

This round will consist of 48 stitches total. You can count the number and check

 Round 6:

Chain three as the turing chain

48 double crochet

change color at the last doulbe crochet

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

 Tips:

Change color : When we are working the last doulbe crochet, don't complete the whole process, after pull the yarn through first two loops on the hook, we need to put the brown yarn down and take the red yarn with our left hand.Hold the red yarn behind of the work, yarn over, then pull through the remaining two loops on the hook to finish the color change.

When working the slip stitch at this round, incert the hook into the gap between the turning chain and the double crochet, rather than the stitch itself.

This round will consist of 48 stitches total. You can count the number and check

Round 7:

Change color

Chain three as the turing chain

Bobble Stitch Increase, Skip 2 stitches as a group ,repeat 16 times

Work a slip stitch at the end of the round

Tips:

Bobble Stitch :We won't be working directly into the stitches,Instead, we will be working into the large gap under the sititch.Let's insert the hook into the gap, try to make three incomplete double crochet and pull the yarn through all the loops on the hook at once, chan 1 to finish a bobble stitch

Bobble stitch increase is: work 2 booble stitch in the same gap

This round will consist of 16 bobble stitches increase total. You can count the number and check
